About Apprenticeships
Why Choose An Apprenticeship?
Kickstart your career with an apprenticeship and earn as you learn.
Across North Wales and beyond, companies are recruiting for apprenticeships and training people in the skills they need to succeed in their career.
As an apprentice you will earn whilst you learn, gaining skills, knowledge, experience and recognised qualifications along the way. Whether you’re aged between 16 and 19 or 20 and over, a range of apprenticeship options may be available to you.
If you enjoy working with children, a childcare apprenticeship could be the perfect career for you!
People studying towards this qualification need to be working in regulated childcare settings with families and children under the age of 8 and/or NHS children’s services for those working with families and children aged 0-19.
Apprentices will attend workshops and learn the core knowledge as well as being assessed in the workplace by our industry served assessing teams.
Learners in this industry will need lots of energy, creativity and be able to work well as part of a team.

Ceri Jones
Studied – Level 2 & 3 Children’s, Care, Play, Learning and Development
“I chose this course because I wanted a new career in childcare and this worked perfectly as it’s a work based course so I was able to both study and work at the same time.
“I have learnt so much completing this qualification and the tutors I had were very thorough and answered any questions I had.
“This course has given me the confidence to further my career and I am now a trainee supervisor which I wouldn’t have been able to do without this qualification.”
Tracey Griffiths
Studied – Level 2 Children’s, Care, Play, Learning and Development
Currently – Nursery Practitioner & Temporary Room Manager at The Homestead Day Nursery
“I came back into education as I wanted a change of career, I applied and was offered a role with The Homestead as an Apprentice Nursery Practitioner with the understanding that I complete my level 2 in childcare alongside my new job.
“Being an Apprentice has enabled me to start my journey into childcare whilst still working and it has helped me to find a career I now love, all in just over a year. My Work Based Learning Practitioner Lisa was so supportive and encouraging throughout the course which made a huge difference. The week I completed the course I was offered the Temporary Room Managers role to cover maternity leave.
“Starting an Apprenticeship at a later stage in your working life can be daunting but age is just a number, follow what feels right! You are never too late to start a new journey.”
Gemma Young
Studied – Level 2 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development
Currently – Play Worker at Oaktree Childcare Centre
“My favourite thing about studying an Apprenticeship is that you get to be hands on. It’s really interesting to see children learn from play and watch them use their imagination to enhance their learning.
“Coleg Cambria has helped me so much with my confidence and as I struggle with dyslexia, having support from tutor Tanya and colleagues from my workplace really encouraged and helped me with writing work and breaking things down so they are easier to understand.
“I hope to continue working in childcare and making a difference to help the children grow their social and emotional development skills.
“My advice for other students would be that if you struggle with dyslexia or any learning difficulties you can do this! You just need to believe in yourself and go and chase the dream job you want to do.”

“During my apprenticeship I was getting the training as well as getting paid. It opens your eyes up to the working environment and gets you ready for your future.
I think it’s brilliant to have the opportunity to do an apprenticeship as a mature person.”

How it Works
In Wales, Apprentices need to be 16+ and work a minimum of 16 hours per week to complete an Apprenticeship. The employer must be willing to support you in the Apprenticeship as you will be assessed in the workplace and may need to regularly attend college (this depends on the qualification) to learn new skills and complete any exams.
You will be assigned an industry experienced practitioner who will come into your workplace and set tasks for you to collect evidence which goes towards your qualification. They will also check on your wellbeing and ensure there are no issues or sign post you to additional support at Cambria if needed.
