About Apprenticeships
Why Choose An Apprenticeship?
Kickstart your career with an apprenticeship and earn as you learn.
Across North Wales and beyond, companies are recruiting for apprenticeships and training people in the skills they need to succeed in their career.
As an apprentice you will earn whilst you learn, gaining skills, knowledge, experience and recognised qualifications along the way. Whether you’re aged between 16 and 19 or 20 and over, a range of apprenticeship options may be available to you.
North Wales has the most technologically advanced manufacturing and engineering firms in the whole of the UK and 34% of North East Wales’ employment is from manufacturing. We work closely with over 150 local engineering and manufacturing to develop their workforces through Apprenticeships and build industry relevant skills to create a thriving sector
Engineering Apprentices will spend time at our recently refurbished state of the art facilities at our Deeside or Bersham Road campus for day release and assessment as well as being assessed onsite by our industry served assessing teams.
Engineering apprentices will be required to have a high level of maths and english as well as the ability to work precisely
We recommend that before starting an Engineering Apprenticeship you enrol full time in college to complete a Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) course or Level 3 Enhanced Engineering before looking for an Apprenticeship

Connor Philipps
Studied – Level 3 Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering
Currently – Working at Electroimpact
“I studied the Level 3 Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering qualification on a day release basis and I previously did the lower levels full time.
“The reason I chose Engineering is because I love the subject and all things mechanical, especially making and fixing things, so starting the Apprenticeship I already had a decent understanding of it all, the course and lecturers helped me develop my skills and knowledge further and Coleg Cambria has really helped support me to progress my career.”
Joe Williams
Studied – Level 2 Enhanced Engineering
Currently – Apprentice Assembly Fitter at Magellan Aerospace
“I decided to study level 2 Enhanced Engineering because the units and skills you study on the course would help put me in a better position for gaining an apprenticeship.
“Since finishing the course I successfully applied for the Magellan Aerospace Apprenticeship programme which I’m really enjoying, the skills and knowledge I gained whilst studying at Coleg Cambria were invaluable and really helped me to get where I am now.”
Darryl Fountain
Studied – Level 2 Engineering, Level 3 Engineering BTEC and NVQ, NVQ Level 4 and a HNC Electrical
Currently – Group Engineering Manager at Village Bakery
“I started college by studying a Level 2 Engineering course full time in 2012, I then had the opportunity to start an Apprenticeship at the Village Bakery where I have since achieved a Level 3 Engineering BTEC and NVQ, NVQ Level 4 and a HNC Electrical.
“Despite the challenges of balancing studies with a demanding shift job, the support of my tutors at Coleg Cambria and hard work meant I was able to complete my studies and gain a position as Group Engineering Manager at Village Bakery where I am responsible for all engineering teams at all 6 factories with a supervisor and team at each site.
“The guidance, advice and support I had at Coleg Cambria is what gave me a good start on my engineering career, I would like to thank all of the tutors I have had because they have been amazing.”

How it Works
In Wales, Apprentices need to be 16+ and work a minimum of 16 hours per week to complete an Apprenticeship. The employer must be willing to support you in the Apprenticeship as you will be assessed in the workplace and may need to regularly attend college (this depends on the qualification) to learn new skills and complete any exams.
You will be assigned an industry experienced practitioner who will come into your workplace and set tasks for you to collect evidence which goes towards your qualification. They will also check on your wellbeing and ensure there are no issues or sign post you to additional support at Cambria if needed.
