Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol

Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol

The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol lead the development of education and training through the medium of Welsh and bilingually in the post-16 sector in Wales.

The College achieves this by working in partnership with universities, further education facilities and apprenticeship providers to build a first class inclusive Welsh medium education and training system.

In order to facilitate provision in the College, the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s work has been shared across different local branches.

The branch aims to support the College’s work and act as a direct point of contact for students and staff.

The Cambria Branch was established in September 2020, the Branch is constantly working to expand and develop Welsh medium academic and social provision in the College.

The branch works across the College’s five sites, and the work consists of facilitating and organising Welsh medium events, activities, presentations and resources and developing relevant work pathways for further education learners and apprentices.

The branch’s vision is to increase the use of the Welsh language and enrich opportunities through the medium of Welsh for learners.

Every year, the College appoints a group of enthusiastic learners to support the work of the Branch Officer and to promote the College’s Welsh medium and bilingual opportunities.

The aim of the scheme is to secure a network of ambassadors throughout Wales to encourage the use of the Welsh language. In September, eight Further Education Welsh ambassadors were appointed for the 2022/23 academic year.

The College will be looking for new Ambassadors for the 2023/24 academic year, so if you are interested or have any questions about the role please e-mail ania.jones@cambria.ac.uk

My name is Carys Morgan. I am studying Agriculture level 3 at the College and work as a Welsh Ambassador on the Llysfasi site. Welsh is my first language and although I learn bilingually on my course, being able to do some of my work in Welsh is fantastic and a great help to me. It’s great to be able to choose which resources or which parts of the course I do in Welsh and my tutors are always a great help in that regard. I enjoy learning in Welsh because that’s what comes naturally to me – I got all my education through the medium of Welsh. In Llysfasi, there is a very close-knit Welsh-speaking community and I am also lucky that most of my teachers can speak Welsh.

Ania Jones
Branch Officer

Hello, I’m Ania and I’m the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Branch Officer here in Cambria. Part of my job is coordinating the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s work and acting as a local point of contact.

A little about me:

  • My favorite food is cheese and I literally have it with everything.
  • I like loads of different genres of music (Welsh and English) but my favourite band is Bwncath.
  • I am somewhat obsessed with fashion, although crocs and pyjamas are my favourites.
  • I enjoy socializing and love meeting new people. I’m always ready to help and to listen over a cup of tea, how about you come over and say hello.

An important part of my role is to support the College’s Welsh-medium provision and host a variety of activities and events in order to promote socialising in Welsh. I hold weekly clubs at each site during lunchtimes, and this is a great opportunity for everyone to come together to listen to music, discuss and enjoy being part of Welsh language society and culture. As an Officer I have great respect for anyone who shows an interest in learning Welsh, I am sure that the best way to learn is through practice while having fun in an informal and friendly atmosphere. I’m here to ensure that the learners’ voice is heard and acted upon, so come along to meet me and we could discuss any ideas you have.

Hi my name is Keira Bell, I am studying Performing Arts Level 2 at Yale. I have had the privilege of being selected to be a Welsh ambassador which brings me many special opportunities. My tutor is a fluent Welsh speaker which brings me a lot of pleasure, as it makes me feel more comfortable when talking to her. As my tutor is a Welsh speaker this gives me the opportunity to choose which resources and which parts of the course I want to complete through the medium of Welsh. Having the option to complete my work in Welsh brings me a great deal of pleasure. Socially, the college provides me with the opportunity to attend a Welsh club where we have a lot of fun by socializing with other Welsh speakers. The Welsh language is important to me because I am the only member of my family who speaks Welsh, no one since my great great grandfather has spoken Welsh and I felt it was important for me to make the most of the opportunities to speak Welsh in the college and outside the college. I feel that it is important to keep the language alive not only in the college but also outside it.

Hello! My name is Josh, I am studying level 2 Media on Deeside site. I am also a Welsh Ambassador for the college and since accepting the position, I have met a number of friendly students who also speak Welsh and do their studies through the medium of Welsh. Personally, the Welsh language is extremely important as I have been speaking the language all my life, I am therefore very proud that I have the opportunity to continue using my Welsh at the College. The College also offers me opportunities to learn parts of my course in Welsh, including completing assessments and written work which helps me build and maintain my confidence to speak Welsh professionally and more often. Many of the college’s staff are fluent Welsh speakers, and they all go out of their way to include as much Welsh as possible in the College to communicate better with students in the language they feel more comfortable talking. I am looking forward to seeing where the Welsh language will take me, what opportunities it will offer, and what I can do with it in the future!
