Course Overview
They allow the learner to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the horticulture sector. This qualification is designed primarily for learners who wish to develop intermediate occupational skills and knowledge in a wide range of horticultural skills to confirm occupational competence in specific job roles including:
● Horticultural Technician
● Landscape gardener

You can progress through the different levels and onto relevant apprenticeships

It is ideal for learners who carry out routine workplace tasks and who may use this qualification as a stepping stone to higher qualifications of this type.

The qualification covers skills from a wide range of areas including a mandatory unit Monitoring and maintaining health and safety and optional units covering a range of topics such as: Maintain and develop personal performance, Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, Levelling and preparing sites for landscaping, Identify the health and maintain the condition of general amenity turf, Maintain the appearance of decorative amenity areas, Establish interior plant displays, Preparing and transporting plants and resources, Installing drainage systems, Use and maintain pedestrian controlled powered equipment, Use and maintain chippers and / or shredders, Collect and prepare propagation material, Obtain, position and prepare growing media, Obtain, position and prepare growing media, Communicate information within the workplace

Learners will choose combined units to meet their learning and development needs. This qualification is a Certificate requiring achievement of 3 credits from the mandatory unit and a further 18 credits from the optional units.
Open distance learning and work based assessment. Your College Assessor will visit the workplace which must comply with working in a safe environment. Assessments will take place to assess competence and underpinning knowledge.
On-line support is available through a virtual learning environment.
Learning takes the form of a mixture of observations in the workplace, written and oral questioning, job sheets, photographs, video and witness statements
Accreditation of prior learning is also considered, but this is time bound.
Suitable learners of all ages are invited to join anytime of the year. It is essential you are currently employed in this area of learning and fully supported by your employer.
All applicants will undertake a thorough training needs analysis to ensure that the correct course and levels are chosen.
The qualification is the first step in an Apprenticeship Framework but may be used as a stepping stone to larger qualifications of this type.
