Course Overview
They allow the learner to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the horticulture sector.This qualification is designed primarily for learners who wish to enhance their high occupational skills and good knowledge in a wide range of horticultural skills to confirm occupational competence in specific job roles including:
County council team leader
Deputy head groundsman
Parks team leader
Deputy head gardener for the national trust
Horticulturist
Self employed

You can progress through the different levels and onto relevant apprenticeships

It is ideal for learners who carry out routine workplace tasks and who may use this qualification as a stepping stone to higher qualifications of this type.
The qualification covers skills from a wide range of areas where mandatory units consists of some of the following: Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security of the workplace, Estimate and programme resource requirements, Manage your own resources, Plan and manage the control of pests, diseases and disorders.
Optional units may include selection from some of the following units:
Exhume coffins and remains, Maintain drainage systems, Plant nomenclature, terminology and identification, Establish and maintain conditions appropriate to the welfare of animals, Installing drainage systems, Maintain and develop decorative horticultural features, Plan and manage the collection of orders, Safe use and application of pesticides, Design landscape areas and specify materials and components, Encourage and motivate volunteers, Manage information for action, Conduct and report on a field survey for habitat types, Conduct and report on a field survey for plants, Conduct and report on a field survey for access networks, Work with and consult the local community, Work with children and young people during environmental activities, Plan, deliver and evaluate environmental projects, Research and plan environmental interpretations, Manage budgets


Learners will choose combined units to meet their learning and development needs. This qualification is a Diploma requiring achievement of 21 credits from the mandatory units and a minimum of 30 credits from the optional units
Open distance learning and work based assessment. Your College Assessor will visit the workplace which must comply with working in a safe environment. Assessments will take place to assess competence and underpinning knowledge.
On-line support is available through a virtual learning environment.
Learning takes the form of a mixture of observations in the workplace, written and oral questioning, job sheets, photographs, video and witness statements
Accreditation of prior learning is also considered, but this is time bound.
Suitable learners of all ages are invited to join anytime of the year. It is essential you are currently employed in this area of learning and fully supported by your employer.
All applicants will undertake a thorough training needs analysis to ensure that the correct course and levels are chosen.
The qualification is the first step in an Apprenticeship Framework but may be used as a stepping stone to larger qualifications of this type.
