Course Overview
The level 2 qualifications in horticulture are designed primarily for learners who wish to develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the horticulture sector by developing occupational skills and good subject knowledge.

This qualification allows the learner to learn, develop in a range of horticultural skills appropriate to occupational competence in specific job roles including:
● Greenkeeper
● 1st Assistant
● Deputy head greenkeeper
● Course manager

It is ideal for learners who carry out routine workplace tasks and who may use this qualification as a stepping stone to higher qualifications of this type.

The qualification covers skills from a range of areas. There is a mandatory unit “Monitoring and maintaining health and safety”. Other units within the qualification can be a combination of the following:
● Maintain and develop personal performance,
● Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
● Preparing ground for seeding and planting,
● Establishing plants and or seeds in soil,
● Maintain the health of sports turf,
● Maintain the condition of sports turf surfaces,
● Renovate and repair sports surfaces,
● Maintain and renovate artificial sports surfaces (optional),
● Use and maintain non‐powered, hand held powered tools and equipment, pedestrian controlled powered equipment, ride‐on powered equipment,
● Loading, transporting and unloading resources within the work area
● Prepare and operate a tractor and attachments,

Learners will choose combined units to meet their learning and development needs. This qualification is a Certificate requiring achievement of 3 credits from the mandatory unit and a further 18 credits from a combination of the other units.

You can progress through the different levels and onto relevant apprenticeships
Your College Assessor will visit the workplace which must provide a safe working environment. Assessments will take place to assess competence and underpinning knowledge.
On-line support is available through a virtual learning environment.
Learning takes the form of a mixture of observations in the workplace, written and oral questioning, job sheets, photographs, video and witness statements
Accreditation of prior learning is also considered, but this is time bound.
Suitable learners of all ages are invited to join anytime of the year. It is essential you are currently employed in this area of learning and fully supported by your employer.
All applicants will undertake a thorough training needs analysis to ensure that the correct course and levels are chosen.
This is a free-standing qualification.
Learners wishing to progress to a diploma can use the units within this qualification as credit towards the diploma.
The qualification may be used as a stepping stone to higher level such as a level 3 award, certificate or diploma in a related area subject to being in a position to include some management within the job role.
