Course Overview

The aim of this qualification is to enhance the skills developed in the introductory level. You’ll master more complex financial processes, including final accounts for sole traders and partnerships, reports and returns and professional ethics.
As a standalone qualification, or as a first step towards the intermediate and advanced levels, it will allow you to move up to further study in accountancy and finance.

The intermediate level will suit you if:
● You’ve completed the introductory accounting level and would like to build your skills
● You’re already working in finance and you’d like a formal recognition of your skills
● You would like to go onto be an AAT full member or study for chartered status

BUSINESS AWARENESS
● Understand business types, structures and governance, and the legal framework in which they operate
● Understand the impact of the external and internal environment on businesses, their performance and decisions
● Understand how businesses and accountant comply with principles of professional ethics
● Understand the impact of new technologies in accounting and the risks associated with the data security
● Communicate information to stakeholders

FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING: PREPARING FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
● Understand the accounting principles underlying final accounts preparation
● Understand the principles of advanced double-entry bookkeeping
● Implement procedures for the acquisition and disposal of non-current assets
● Prepare and record depreciation calculations
● Record period end adjustments
● Produce and extend the trial balance
● Produce financial statements for sole traders and partnerships
● Interpret financial statements using profitability ratios
● Prepare accounting records from incomplete information

MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING TECHNIQUES
● Understand the purpose and use of management accounting within organisations
● Use techniques required for dealing with costs
● Attribute costs according to organisational requirements
● Investigate deviations from the budgets
● Use spreadsheet techniques to provide management accounting information
● Use management accounting techniques to support short-term decision making
● Understand the principles of cash management

TAX PROCESSES FOR BUSINESSES
● Understand legislation requirements relating to VAT
● Calculate VAT
● Review and verify VAT returns
● Understand principles of payroll
● Report information within the organisation
You will be required to undertake an initial assessment to confirm your suitability for this course.
AAT assessments are designed to assess your knowledge and understanding of the skills you’ve developed. AAT assessments:
● Are practical computer based assessments (CBA)
● Are mostly marked automatically, so you can see provisional results straight away. This lets you understand how you’re progressing.

Types of computer based assessments (CBA)
There are two main types of computer based assessment (CBA):

● Computer based tests (CBT) marked wholly by AAT computer software. Level 3 provisional results are available on the assessment day.
● Computer based projects (CBA) marked partly by computer and partly human marked by AAT Examiners. The results from these exams take 6 weeks to arrive.
