Course Overview
By successfully completing this qualification learners will demonstrate they meet the required industry standards to successfully manage a yard, or become a senior groom or freelance groom/rider.
Learners should expect to gain practical experience in a work environment to develop their skills and knowledge in preparation for level 4 assessments. They need to have access to a variety of horses to develop their horse care, lunging and riding skills and expand their experience.
A skills record book needs to be completed prior to the BHS assessment by an accredited coach of the correct level.

This is designed for experienced learners working in the equine industry. It gives the opportunity to develop skills through a variety of units including; Using specialist tack, understanding the nutritional requirements of horses, managing competition horses, maintaining and promoting horse health and physical well-being, care of horses including mares and youngstock and older horses, improving customer care, interpersonal skills, requirements for self employment, roles and responsibilities of a yard manager, financial requirements for an equestrian business, record keeping, marketing, management of a yard and grassland, lunging of competition horses and riding options in Eventing, Dressage or Show Jumping.

In the riding you will need to be able to prepare for, ride and assess horses to develop their way of going, including:
Inexperienced horses
Trained horses up to Elementary level to develop their way of going
Trained horses over a course of show jumps up to 1.10 metres/3 feet 7 inches
Trained horses over a cross country course up to 1 metre/3 feet 3 inches
Unit 4: Stage 4 Senior Ride for Training Eventing includes riding all phases of eventing; dressage, show jumping and cross country. There are options to complete dressage or show jumping only routes for those that are discipline specific riders.
Open distance learning, work based and BHSQ centre based assessment. Your College Assessor will visit the workplace which must comply with working in a safe environment. Assessments will take place to assess competence and underpinning knowledge in preparation of attending the BHS assessment sections.

Online support is available through a virtual learning environment.
Learning takes the form of a mixture of observations in the workplace, verbal discussions and a BHSQ assessment day at an approved centre.
Accreditation of prior learning is also considered, but this can be time bound.
Suitable learners over the age of 18 are invited to join anytime of the year. It is essential you are currently employed in this area of learning and fully supported by your employer.

All applicants will undertake a thorough training needs analysis to ensure that the correct course and levels are chosen.
BHS gold membership will be required.
This qualification is part of a framework.
Once completed, learners can progress to the BHS Performance Manager and Rider
