Course Overview
The A Level is a challenging, rewarding and exciting programme of study that offers a valuable experience for those with a keen interest in digital image making and photography. The course covers a broad range of photographic areas such as editorial, advertising, fashion, documentary, fine art and creative practices.

You will develop creative skills through a variety of photographic activities, using a wide range of techniques, approaches and experimental imagery, alongside traditional and digital processes to produce a personal portfolio of work. You will investigate historical and contemporary photographic practices, looking at the work of others for inspiration, as well as develop your own image editing and analysis skills. The course will broaden your life-long transferable skills such as problem solving, independent learning and visual language, whilst encouraging your creative potential.

Using our specialist photography studio, wet-based darkroom and digital mac suites, you will learn industry standard techniques to support you in the development of your artistic style and visual communication skills. Integral to the course are opportunities to attend workshops with photographers and creatives, visits to galleries and museums, and participation in creative industry competitions in local, national and international levels.
At AS level there is one non exam assessment unit – Personal Creative Enquiry. This is an extended, exploratory project/portfolio based on themes and subject matter which are personal and meaningful to you. Unit 1 is internally assessed and externally moderated.

At A2 level there are two non exam assessment units.
Unit 2 – Personal Investigation, a major in-depth critical, practical and theoretical investigative project/portfolio and an extended written element of 1000 words minimum.
Unit 3 – Externally Set Assignment set by the awarding body.

Both Unit 2 and 3 are internally assessed and externally moderated.
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English Language / Welsh (1st Language) and Maths.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
You may wish to progress onto a L3/4 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (pre-degree) or you can continue your studies at university or gain employment in the Creative Industries.

This course can lead to career opportunities in the following areas: photographer, gallery curatorial work, arts management, teaching/lecturing, editor, photo journalist, just to name a few.
Some courses may require equipment and/or uniforms to be purchased.
