Course Overview
The qualification will be designed for individuals working in, or intending to work, in the Children's Care, Play, Learning and Development sectors.

The qualification will cover the core knowledge and understanding required to work within childcare. By studying this qualification, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the core principles and values which underpin children's care, play, learning and development practice.

Alongside the core qualification you will complete the Level 2 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice and Theory level 2 to provide learners with the licence to practise to assist with working with children.

Some of the key subjects you will be covering will be:
Supporting Core Practice in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development
Supporting Play, Learning, Growth and Development
Supporting Nutrition and Hydration in Early Years
Responding to Signs of Potential Illness and Infestation/Infection
Beginning to Understand Child Development
Safeguarding Children
For the core qualification, there will be an externally marked assessment which includes a multiple choice examination.

For the Practice and Theory qualification, there will be an externally marked exam which you can sit in January and May. In order to gain the licence to practise working with children at level 2, you will then be assessed on your placement and have your own designated assessor.

You attend a compulsory work placement during your course where you will complete 280 hours placement across the year.
4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or above including English Language/Welsh (1st Language) and Maths.

Progression learners from level 1 courses will need to demonstrate they have achieved at least a Level 1 ESW for English and Maths if they have not achieved D’s in GCSE. Progression learners will apply in March with their Progress Coach.

You must be able to demonstrate the potential to work independently and safely in childcare settings.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
On successful completion of the core qualification and the level 2 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice and Theory learners will be able to progress into employment or enrol on the level 3 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice and Theory which can lead you to a university degree course in the future.

Examples of job roles include those who work under supervision, such as Playgroup Assistant, Nursery Assistant, Crèche Assistant, Out of School Childcare Worker and Cylch Meithrin Assistant.
Some courses may require kit/uniform to be purchased. Please see attached kit list for further information.
