Course Overview
Brushcutters/trimmers are capable of good work rates in awkward terrain/situations, but they also have the potential of being one of the most dangerous machines. All operators must be aware of the need for correct protective clothing, correct maintenance and the observance of safe operating procedures. Environmental factors must also be observed in the modern day working environment. This course gives the reasons for the safety considerations, guidance on how best to maintain a safe working environment, and an understanding of the ways to optimise work rate.
Product objectives:
Upon completing the NPTC Level 2 Award in the safe use of Brushcutters/ Trimmers training course you will be able to:
● Produce a site specific Risk Assessment for trimmer and brushcutter operations. Identify the necessary personal protective equipment required
● Identify the health and safety features required on a trimmer and brushcutter
● Identify defects on a trimmer / brushcutter and cutting equipment and decide which the operator can remedy and which require a service engineer’s attention
● Carry out correctly all routine maintenance in accordance with the machine manufacturer’s instruction book and /or this workbook
● Prepare the trimmer / brushcutter for use with the correct fuel/oil mix
● Start the trimmer / brushcutter from both hot and cold start in a safe manner
● Carry out pre-cutting checks
● State the possible hazards/risks when carrying out maintenance or operational tasks
● Maintain the trimmer / brushcutter and cutting heads in a safe and efficient working condition
● Adjust the trimmer / brushcutter for safe and comfortable operation
● Select the correct cutting head for the relevant operating conditions
● Operate the trimmer / brushcutter in a safe manner having regard for the safety of the public, property and environmental factors
● Organise site and use a systematic method of working where possible
