Course Overview
Compulsory topics for both pathways include:
• domestic construction technology
• industrial and commercial construction technology
• health and safety in the built environment
• sustainability and new technologies
• mathematics for the built environment
For the ‘Construction’ pathway you will also take the following
units:
• construction site supervision
• construction science and materials
• measurement, tendering and estimating
• site surveying
For the ‘Design and Planning’ pathway you will also take the
following units:
• architectural design and planning
• graphical communication
• building surveying
• building regulations
You will study both the practical use and knowledge of the
subject, which may involve local employers providing real
examples as part of the training. It is expected that you will visit
or have visits from employers who can provide demonstrations
and talks on the industry, which may also be a relevant work
placement with an employer

Applicants will be required to satisfy one of the following:
• 4 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including Maths, a Science subject and a subject requiring the use of written English/Welsh (1st Language).
• BTEC ‘Certificate’ or ‘First Diploma’ in a related subject.
• Appropriate knowledge and/or experience gained at work or from other related qualifications.
Applications from students with appropriate alternative qualifications and mature students with relevant industrial experience are welcome and will be given careful consideration.
