Former Coleg Cambria student Jonathon Dawes has combined academic excellence, leadership and a passion for inclusion to become one of the UK's rising voices in tennis and youth politics.
After achieving A*s in four A Levels and serving as Student President, Jonathon went on to King's College London, where he transformed student tennis by growing membership by 65%, securing a partnership with Wilson, launching the university's first LGBTQ+ Tennis Festival, and helping engage 350+ students while unlocking £2,500+ in funding.
Now the youngest member of the LTA Council, Jonathon has been recognised with King's College London's Distinguished Alumni Emerging Leader Award and is preparing to begin a PhD exploring how politics can improve access to tennis for under-served communities.
I'm committed to making tennis more accessible for everyone, in Wales, the UK and beyond.

Former Coleg Cambria student Matthew has turned his passion for politics, media and communications into a career at the heart of one of the UK's busiest police forces.
After studying A Levels in Government and Politics, Media Studies, English Language and the Welsh Baccalaureate at Deeside Sixth Form Centre, Matthew graduated from the University of Sheffield with a BA in International Relations and Politics before completing a Master's in Broadcast Journalism.
His achievements included receiving the prestigious Dan Walker Journalism Scholarship and being awarded Best Overall Performance on his MA programme.
Following a communications role in Westminster, Matthew joined the Metropolitan Police, where he now works in the press office at New Scotland Yard, supporting communications on major criminal investigations and incidents.
The way of teaching at Coleg Cambria really set me up for everything that has come since. It gave me the academic skills to succeed and encouraged me to believe more in my abilities.

Following Deeside Sixth, I obtained a first class BA History from the University of York. Currently, I'm in the process of completing my MA in Contemporary History and International Politics at the University of York.
My choice to study history was actually due to one of the History modules I studied at Deeside Sixth! I thoroughly enjoyed studying the American Century module, which helped me realise my interest in modern imperial history. The history and legacies of modern empires then became the focus of my research across both my undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Above all, I also would not be where I am today without the encouragement, motivation and support the amazing lecturers at Deeside Sixth provided me.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Coleg Cambria. What stands out to me the most about my course is the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through placements. Working directly with children while learning has been incredibly rewarding and has given me invaluable practical skills.
The teaching and support from my tutors at Coleg Cambria have been exceptional. Their guidance has made a significant impact on my learning journey. After completing my course, I am excited to pursue my career in social work."

"I chose to study at Coleg Cambria as it offered the best path into my chosen industry. The hands-on coursework and supportive tutors, with real-world experience, made learning engaging and insightful. After completing my Level 3 course, I progressed to my HNC at the same college, avoiding the need for university. Now, I work as an Architect Technician at CB3 Design Architects in Cheshire."

"I joined the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme and loved being at Coleg Cambria; everyone was friendly and welcoming, and there was support available everywhere. The programme helped me achieve my dream job as a carer, and I couldn’t be happier with where I am today, thanks to all the support I received."

"I live on a farm at home. My Dad is good with the livestock but not as good with machinery, which is why I wanted to learn that side - to bring something new to the farm - although I’d definitely like to experience working abroad at some stage too. There are a lot of career opportunities in this area of study. It’s a vast sector with lots of varied roles. I like the relationship we have with the tutors at college, and the sense of community here at Coleg Cambria.”
