Starting college is an exciting step towards greater independence. While there are some similarities to school, there are also a few important differences that parents and guardians should be aware of.

Most college communications are sent directly to learners rather than parents or guardians. This helps young people develop independence and responsibility.

Encourage your young person to regularly check their college emails, the Cambria app and our social media channels so they don’t miss important updates.

College gives young people greater responsibility for their learning and day-to-day organisation.

This includes:

  • Managing their timetable
  • Meeting deadlines
  • Attending lessons
  • Accessing support when needed

Parents still play an important role, but learners are encouraged to take ownership of their college experience.

Unlike school, timetables can vary from day to day depending on a learner’s course.

Learners may have a mix of:

  • Classroom-based lessons
  • Practical sessions
  • Independent study
  • Work placements or industry experiences

While college promotes independence, learners are never expected to manage challenges alone.

Support is available through:

If your young person is struggling, encourage them to speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

Progress Coaches help learners with their personal development, progression planning and overall college experience.

Many parents find that Progress Coaches fulfil a similar role to a form tutor at school, while also helping learners prepare for their future goals.

College is about more than qualifications.

Learners can take part in clubs, activities, enrichment opportunities, volunteering, competitions and events to help them develop new skills, build confidence and make friends.

They can register their interest for Cambria Activities here.

Many young people worry about making friends before they start college.

This is one of the most common concerns and is completely normal.

Events such as Freshers Fairs, enrichment activities and course-based activities help learners meet new people and get involved in college life.

Just like at school, good attendance is key to success at college. Regular attendance helps learners stay on track with their studies and get the most from their college experience.

If your young person is unable to attend, they should follow the college absence reporting procedures and let us know as soon as possible via the app. To see how to report your absence, Click here.

It’s almost time to say yes to your place!
