Course Overview

Coleg Cambria offers a full-time, one-year Level 3/4 Diploma in Foundation Studies Art and Design (Pre-Degree). This course is designed to be the first significant step for aspiring artists and designers.

The Foundation Art & Design diploma is a stimulating course that will prepare you for degree-level education. From developing a personal language to critically analysing the potential of your ideas, you will build a foundation on which to thrive in the world of Art & Design. You will be encouraged to explore, experiment and to take risks, all of which will extend your critical independence and enable you to demonstrate a full understanding of the relevant standards required to achieve progression to Higher Education. You will learn through projects, assignments, presentations, group critiques to develop strong communication skills, which will support the transition from general to specialist Art and Design education.

The curriculum explores a wide range of 2D and 3D processes, including drawing, fine art, textiles, fashion, graphics, CAD, and photography, to help you select a specialist area of study. The final part of the course involves proposing, planning, creating, and exhibiting a major project. You'll also have opportunities to work with practising artists, designers, and craftspeople, and participate in cultural and contextual activities and educational visits.

Coleg Cambria is committed to supporting your progression to employment or Higher Education. Therefore, all courses at Coleg Cambria provide the opportunity for the development of English and Maths to Level 2 and ideally to GCSE Grade C/4 if you haven't already achieved this at school/college. This will enhance your prospects in the jobs market and will also enable progression to Higher Education.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course
The Foundation Diploma is a Level 3 qualification with Units 1-4 at Level 3 and Units 5-6 at Level 4. All six units are mandatory. Units 5 & 6, which involve planning, creating, presenting, and reviewing a major project in Art and Design, demonstrate your learning from the other units. These units are graded Pass, Merit, or Distinction, determining your overall qualification grade, and are assessed both internally and externally.
This Level 3/4 Pre-Degree Foundation Diploma in Art & Design is highly valued by Higher Education institutions. It can lead to progression onto prestigious UK universities to study various Art, Design, and Creative Media courses such as Ceramics, Textiles, Fine Art, Graphics, Illustration, Product Design, Fashion, Interior Decoration or Photography as some examples.
