Confirming Your Place

(From GCSE results day before you start in September)
I haven’t received the required grades to start my course and I haven’t confirmed my place, what should I do?

Course Applications

I want to change my application to a different course. How do I do this?

If you want to swap before September please contact Admissions at admissions@cambria.ac.uk or 0300 30 30 007, or if it’s in September follow the Swap Don’t Drop process.

Starting College

What date do I start college?

You will receive your start date after you have confirmed your place at the end of August. Contact welcome@cambria.ac.uk if you cannot find your email.

What should I wear on my first day in college?

Wear something comfortable and practical.

When will I receive my timetable?

Timetables will be available on the Cambria app after Induction. We can’t confirm timetables before that, due to the volume of learners and the number of groups still being finalised.

Where can I find my Kit/Equipment List?

Kit/Equipment lists are on our website. Search for your course and there will be a link titled “Kit List”.

Equality & Diversity

How can I meet people from my community at college?

Over the summer we will be running transition days for students from the LGBTQ+ Community, and learners from ethnic minority backgrounds. This will enable you to find out about the support at college, whilst also meeting people from your community to make connections before you get here in September. 

Once you get here, we run clubs and groups for communities. We have an LGBTQ+ Club on most sites.

Are there spaces for me to pray?

We have dedicated Prayer Rooms on our Yale and Deeside sites, and prayer spaces will be made available on our other sites. Ask any staff member on arrival where these are. Reach out to chaplaincy@cambria.ac.uk for more support with spirituality, faith, religion or belief.

I am transgender/non-binary, and I’d like College to use my chosen name and pronouns. Is this possible?

We will always respect the name and pronouns that you want to be referred to as. We can update our systems to reflect your chosen name and pronouns. If you didn’t provide a ‘known as’ name on application but would like to tell us it now, please contact equalityanddiversity@cambria.ac.uk

Learning Support & Additional Learning Needs Support

We have a range of advice and guidance available, please discuss with your specialist tutor or email our Learning Support Team learning.support@cambria.ac.uk.

Do I have to disclose my additional needs?

Letting us know about your individual needs early on means that we can put support in place immediately. You can disclose your needs at any stage of your learning journey.

Will college support be like school support?

At college your support needs will be met by a team of people called the Inclusion Team. Your personal support needs will be identified and your support may be in the classroom or delivered as an additional session that you attend with a Specialist Lecturer or Mentor.

How do I contact the learning support team?

There are a number of ways to get in contact with the team. 

If you have told us you’ve previously had support, we will be in contact with you. 

If you have started on your course, you can speak to the teaching staff on your course and they can refer you to the team.

Alternatively, you can find us in the Inclusion areas on each site and discuss directly with the team for advice and guidance. Each curriculum area has a zoned specialist tutor.

What support is available in college for my learning needs?

The College has lots of support for you. We have support available to everyone, this includes access to specialist lecturers and targeted support. 

We also have bespoke support, this may include a Communication Support Worker or a Care and Independence Support Worker. 

This is known as our Universal and Additional Learning provision.

I have an Individual Development Plan (IDP)/Education Health & Care Plan (EHCP) or Learning Skills Plan (LSP).
What do I need to do?

Please let your school or local authority know that you wish to attend Coleg Cambria and ask them to send us a copy of your IDP/EHCP/LSP as soon as possible.

If you have an IDP/EHCP you can also contact IDP@cambria.ac.uk.

When we receive your plan, the Inclusion Team can then start to plan how we can best support you on your course.

Please make sure that you still apply to the College so that we can ensure that your desired course is the correct course and correct level for you.

Once you have been offered a place, a member of the Inclusion Team will contact you to discuss your needs and put together a support plan.

I am autistic, what support is available?

We have a range of support available, including ASD mentors, low-sensory environments and alternate inclusion spaces where required.

I’ve had exam access arrangements before, who do I speak to about this in college?

Exam access arrangements don’t automatically continue from school so getting in contact with the Inclusion Team is important. You can do this by letting your tutors know, speaking to your Progress Coach or by speaking to your zoned specialist tutor directly.

Library & Academic Support

Where will I get my username and password from?

You’ll receive this on your first day, if you have any problems with it or need to change it you can call into the library on your site or email library@cambria.ac.uk.

I don’t have a computer at home, can I borrow a laptop?

We have Chromebooks available for you to loan for three weeks at a time, pop into the library on your site and we can help you. We also have plenty of PC’s and Chromebooks you can use when you’re in the libraries.

I’ve been told I need books for my course, where can I get them from?

The libraries on your sites are well stocked with the books you need and wherever we can, we provide eBooks that you can access from home. You may be entitled to some funding to purchase your own copies. For more information on funding either ask in your library or contact student services.

I’m worried about keeping up with all my college work, will I get support with this?

The College provides lots of support while you study. Along with your tutors and Progress Coaches, each site has a team of Academic Skills Facilitators and Advisors who can help you with study skills such as note taking, time management and understanding your assignments. You will have group sessions as part of your classes but you can also book 1:1 support from the team.

I haven’t been in education for some time, can I get help to brush up my digital skills?

Yes! The library teams can help you with this too. Getting you logged in, helping with passwords and getting you on the college Wi-Fi can all be done in the libraries. 

Wellbeing

How do I contact the wellbeing team?

You can contact the wellbeing team by email on wellbeing@cambria.ac.uk or you can come into one of our Wellbeing Hubs and speak with a Wellbeing Advisor who would be happy to help.

Do I have to disclose my mental health needs?

You don’t have to disclose your mental health struggles with us, but letting us know about these early on means we can put the right support in place for you as soon as possible.

Will college support be like school support?

At Coleg Cambria we have a wide range of mental health and wellbeing support available, this ranges from our Mental Health and Wellbeing Transition Officer who can help you during your transition into college (and onto Higher Education), our Wellbeing Advisors who are there to help and support you when you’re feeling low or want someone to talk to about your worries, Resilience Coaches and our Counsellors.

I have anxiety about coming to college, can I meet with someone before I come and have a look around?

We understand that college can be an exciting but nervous time. We can arrange for our Mental Health and Wellbeing Transition Officer to give you a one-to-one tour and have a chat about what support we have available for you at Coleg Cambria.

How can I tell my tutors what support I need for my mental health?

You can speak with a member of the Wellbeing Team to create a support plan which your tutors will have access to. This can help you tell your tutors what your struggles are and what they can do to support you. This can include things such as; where you’d prefer to sit in the classroom, if you need a 5 minute break when you feel overwhelmed, or if you need to use fidget toys to help you concentrate in class. Our Wellbeing Team is more than happy to discuss ways we can help you during your time at college.
